Description

The LM7805 of three terminal positive regulators are available in the TO-220 package and with several fixed output voltages, making them useful in a wide range of applications. Each type employs internal current limiting, thermal shut down and safe operating area protection, making it essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1A output current. Although designed primarily as fixed voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable voltages and currents.

This regulator can operate over an input voltage range of 7V to 35V. When the input voltage is within this range, the LM7805 provides a stable 5V output. Additionally, it has an internal overheating protection function built in, which protects the IC by automatically stopping operation in case of overheating.

The LM78XX offer several fixed output voltages making them useful in wide range of applications. When used as a zener diode/resistor combination replacement, the LM78XX usually results in an effective output impedance improvement of two orders of magnitude, lower quiescent current.

TL431 Shunt Regulator

Description

The TL431, TL431A, TL431B integrated circuits are three–terminal programmable shunt regulator diodes. A shunt regulator is an electronic circuit used for voltage regulation. This circuit works by dissipating the difference between the input and output voltages through a resistor to regulate the output voltage.

These monolithic IC voltage references operate as a low temperature coefficient zener which is programmable from V refto 36 V with two external resistors. These devices exhibit a wide operating current range of 1.0 mA to 100 mA with a typical dynamic impedance of 0.22 Ω. The characteristics of these references make them excellent replacements for zener diodes in many applications such as digital voltmeters, power supplies, and op amp circuitry. The 2.5 V reference makes it convenient to obtain a stable reference from 5.0 V logic supplies, and since the TL431, A, B operates as a shunt regulator, it can be used as either a positive or negative voltage reference.

The TL431 has three pins that resemble diodes. The pin configuration consists of anode, cathode, and reference, and performs operations related to voltage reference.
